Who's Rocky Watson?

He's Kootenai County's sheriff, a post he's held for 11 years through two tours of duty. He's lived in Kootenai County for 59 years.

Some of Rocky Watson's best memories of Italy are the food and the cozy hide-aways in which it was served. Rocky figured such memorable experiences were exclusive to Italy until he discovered Angelo's Ristorante in Midtown Coeur d'Alene.

"The smells and textures-they have it all," Rocky says. "They're the real Italian."

Rocky's glowing approval of Angelo's began with the menu, which offers only dinners. Entrees come with Italian names, for instance Scoglio alla Griglia, and generous descriptions in English. The Scoglio is marinated and grilled prawns, sea scallops and clams. The menu recommends Orvieto, a velvety Italian white wine, to accompany it.

Rocky also likes Angelo's white tablecloths and reserved but courteous service.

He's returned with his wife, Mary, many times-wisely, with reservations-and has liked every meal he's had.

"I make a point to try something different every time," Rocky says. "I'm making my way down the left side of the menu."

Owner and Chef Angelo Martini Brunson arrives at 7 a.m. to fashion organic ingredients into eggplant appetizers stuffed with goat cheese, veal with proscuitto and provolone, braised leeks with poached pears and gorgonzola cheese. Add French-press coffee with a homemade chocolate mocha torte and Rocky is a happy diner.
