Who's Steve Gibbs?
Steve Gibbs has owned The Art Spirit Gallery in downtown Coeur d'Alene for nine years and lived in the city for 14. His wife is a 30-year Coeur d'Alene resident.

We're sorry to say Cafe Doma has closed but their Doma Coffee is available at many local establishments.

 

Steve Gibbs knows his days start best at Café Doma in downtown Coeur d'Alene.

"Coffee is an art to them," Steve says. "They do a top job from roasting to brewing."

Café Doma is the dining component of Terry and Rebecca Patano's local coffee roasting operation.

Most days Steve parks himself on one of Doma's cushioned window seats with the morning newspaper at 6 a.m. His latte arrives with a flower or sun or moon etched in dark espresso into the white foam. Local artwork from the nearby gallery Steve owns hangs on Doma's walls giving the coffee house a comfortable contemporary Italian atmosphere.

Weekdays, Steve indulges on Doma's cranberry oat scones, baked on the premises. The scones share display window billing with freshly baked muffins, Danish, bagels and mouthwatering coffee cake.

Weekends, Steve treats himself to Sally's Special, an omelet with tomato, zucchini, mozzarella and cheddar cheeses and salsa. "Spicy, just like the woman," reads the menu. The omelet is named for Sally Dodge, one of Doma's partners.

Doma's gastronomic gifts stretch through the day. Everything is fresh and baked on site, from thin-crust pizzas to quiche and a variety of salads. But Steve's favorite time of day at Doma is mornings when the café's intoxicating aroma attracts a steady crowd of locals. Conversation is animated and non-stop. Interruptions are as common as requests for coffee refills.

"I like that it's a community spot," Steve says. "I always see good friends at Doma."
