Who's Gary Bartoo?

Gary Bartoo has practiced physical therapy for 28 years at his Coeur d'Alene Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine. He's lived in Coeur d'Alene 32 years.

The proximity to his work initially pulled Gary Bartoo to Joey's Smokin' B-B-Q in Coeur d'Alene's Riverstone district, but the smoked pulled pork and the Cobb salad with its subtle barbecue aroma keep him going back.

"It's a great place, cool cuisine," Gary says.

Gary's favorite eateries vary by dish and meal. Joey's joined his list after the first visit.

"It's open, not dark and dingy and they play video concerts on a plasma TV," Gary says. "It's a fun place to go to when the ballgame's on."

Joey's is contemporary barbecue with copper artwork on the walls complements a warm brown and rust décor. A semi-circular bar invites dining in front of the plasma TV.

Gary is slowly making his way through a menu packed with recipes owner Randy Folk collected throughout the southern United States-Texas smoked brisket and barbecued chicken, dry-rubbed ribs and slow-cooked tri-tip, bourbon pecan pie and sweet potato pie.

Quantity is never a problem. Gary's pulled pork sandwich comes with barbecued beans Randy says are addictive and freshly made and slightly sweet coleslaw. If Gary needs more, Joey's offers sweet potato fries and hush puppies-a rare find in northern Idaho.

"You walk up and order and they bring it to you or you can take it out," Gary says.

Owner Randy Folk's recommendation:
"We smoke all our meats a minimum of 12 hours, which you see a lot in the South. Try the Kobe Beef Ribs or the Baby Back Pork Ribs."
